The IV Latin American Pro-Life Conference took place 12-14 November, 1999, in Brasilia, capital of Brazil. Like the previous three (Monterrey, Mexico; Santiago, Chile; and Lujan, Argentina), this conference was organized at the request of H.E. Alfonso Cardinal López Trujillo, President of the Pontifical Council for the Family. Dr. Humberto Vieira, President of PROVIDAFAMILIA of Brazil, took on this responsibility successfully. PROVIDAFAMILIA is the official representation in that country of Vida Humana Internacional (VHI), HLI's Hispanic Division.
The conference began with a solemn Mass, presided by Cardinal Trujillo. Pro-life/family leaders from Brazil and 8 other countries participated in this conference. Dr. Brian Clowes, author of The Facts of Life and Director of HLI's Pro-Life/Family Institute, gave a talk at said conference and put on training sessions for pro-life activists afterwards. The Facts of Life, which is a very complete pro-life/family manual, has been recently translated and printed in Portuguese.
On Saturday, 13 November, the pro-life leaders from the different countries who participated at the conference, gathered to share and strategize. These sessions were presided by pro-life leader and lawyer Dr. Jorge Scala, one of VHI's two representatives in Argentina. Mrs. Magaly Llaguno, Executive Director of VHI, who was also present at the conference, appointed Dr. Scala Coordinator of VHI's Latin American Council for Life and Family. VHI congratulates Dr. Scala and Dr. Vieira for their great pro-life work.
