Puerto Rico: Centro San José Provida y Familia Reports
By Joan Bermúdez

For the past seven years our group of eight volunteers has operated a small office in the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Parish in the town of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Our main work has always been educational. Following our Holy Father's advice of the young evangelizing the young, we prepare groups of high school students, from the Saint Joseph High School Pro-life Club, to deliver pro-life and pro-chastity talks for other local high school students.

These students are a visible sign of hope in a highly consumerist society where everyone is measured for what he has. The girls are well-received by the staff and the students, and we are invariably approached by some students who would like to form a pro-life club in their school. The Center offers to help them get started, but the problem is always finding a pro-life teacher to support them.

In our presentation in public schools we have often encountered the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) local group distributing their "pro-choice" and "pro-reproductive" rights literature. In some instances they are even invited to private schools. In Puerto Rico, the IPPF affiliate is called by the deceptive name of Profamilia ("Pro-Family") so most people do not know what they stand for.

Two years ago we were given the opportunity by our good friend Luis Cardinal Aponte Martínez to prepare a pro-life\family television program. We have a panel discussion and usually invite a distinguished guest who is an expert on the topic. We have covered almost all the serious pro-life issues: abortion, sex education, cloning, euthanasia, etc. At the same time we bring in topics like family communication, strengthening of family virtues, the sacraments and liturgical events. In other words anything goes as long as it helps the family.

At this time of the year we expect the re-appearance of anti-family and anti-life bills in the Senate, since the media is heavily promoting pornography, contraception, and "women's rights". The media is also promoting anti-Catholic sentiments with the presentation of the movie "Dogma" and the soon to be released "The Pope Must Die".

We are awaiting an appointment with our new Archbishop Rev. Roberto González, to see if we can work together to declare March 25 the official Day of the Unborn.

We have a growing mailing list and publish a one-page newsletter every month or two in Spanish. If you would like to receive it, please let us know. The first Sunday of every month we celebrate a pro-life Mass.

We have many plans for this Jubilee year and we ask for God's Blessing and your prayers. We want to thank those of you who have donated to Vida Humana Internacional, HLI's Hispanic Division. Your donations have enabled us to reach many thousands with the pro-life/family message.
