BRAZIL: CEDAW Ratification Stopped with the Aid of HLI Affiliate

On April 25, 2002, The Brazilian Senate was scheduled to ratify the Protocol for the Convention of the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). But, thanks to the quick intervention of the Bishops and prolife groups, ratification was rejected. Dr Humberto L. Vieira, President of Provida Familia, an affiliate of Human Life International (VHI), acted on behalf of D. Raymundo Damasceno of Assis, Secretary General of Brazil’s Catholic Conference of Bishops (CNBB), who personally delivered a petition to reject this antilife Convention presented before the Brazilian Senate. This resulted in the subsequent postponement of this topic, it is to be reconsidered at the next session of the Brazilian Senate, next June 5, 2002.
