HLI’s affiliate in Chile, the Anonymous Movement for Life (MAV - Movimiento Anonimo por la Vida), is organizing the Second International Conference for Life and Family with the participation of Fr. The first conference, which was co-sponsored by HLI and took place August 19-21, 1994, was a huge success. Over five thousand attended! After this second conference, MAV will host a meeting of the southern tip HLI affiliates and collaborators with Fr. Tom. The fight against the legalization of abortion in Chile rages on as efforts to legalize the sale of the morning-after pill are advanced by the government. The Church and the pro-life movement in Chile recently won a battle against the ratification of CEDAW, The UN Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. CEDAW acts as a magic key that opens all the locks of the legal system to modify or abolish laws, regulations, customs or active practices which the UN may consider discriminatory against women. This includes, of course, any laws that make abortion illegal, but it goes further to the inclusion of special “gay” rights and other affronts to Judeo-Christian beliefs.
