Multi-national campaign establishes The "Day of the Unborn Child" throughout Latin America.
By Eileen Mcgarrity

Vida Humana Internacional has been working diligently with many prolife groups and affiliates, at helping several countries in Latin America establish a "Day of the Unborn Child". Every year, many activities are planned for this day in order to commemorate the value of and respect for human life from conception to natural death.

Argentina was the first country to celebrate this day in 1998 when President Menem decreed March 25th, the Feast of the Annunciation, as "the Day of the Unborn Child". Soon after, other Latin American nations began to follow suit. To date, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Peru and Costa Rica have ratified national laws proclaiming a Day of the Unborn Child in their own nations.

The Catholic Conference of Bishops in Peru, Venezuela and Cuba have also proclaimed the Day of the Unborn Child, which they also celebrate on March 25th with many festivities, both civil and ecclesiastic.

Last year, (2001) Uruguay and Chile also hosted festivities, culminated by a Eucharistic Celebration during which pregnant mothers received a special blessing. To date, the largest celebration of the Day of the Unborn Child was held in Nicaragua, where civil and religious leaders united to affirm the rights of the unborn. The Prolife Nicaraguan Association, ANPROVIDA an affiliate of Vida Humana Internacional, coordinated the event, which filled the entire National Baseball Stadium.

Currently, the prolife group in Uruguay, Vivir en Familia (Family Life) is collecting signatures in their country to also ratify a Day of the Unborn Child.

Why is it so important to celebrate a day for the unborn? Because it raises awareness of the intrinsic value of all human life, as well as bringing to the light of day the suffering that the tiny, defenseless unborn endure as their lives are horribly cut short by abortion before they have a chance to live - a right every human being is entitled to!

Humanity at present is engaged in the most massive acts of genocide through abortion in human history. Any society is only as strong as it protects its weakest members. It is our hope that all nations will assume responsibility for the protection of all human life, by putting a stop to the slaughter of the innocent and come to the aid of their own unborn children by proclaiming every day, a day for the Unborn Child!
